GPS : GOAL Positioning System or 7 easy steps to reach ANY goal

Stewards Log: 11:15:03:05:2010

A GPS helps you get to where you are going by charting a path from where you are to there…what if goal planning could be that easy?

It can be!

Let’s take a journey shall we?  Get out a pen and a sheet of paper and follow along.  It should only take you 5 min or so to have a full personal GPS.

(G) Our Main Goal

1. Where would I like to go? take the time to describe this goal in as much detail as you can think of or picture in your mind.   This can be any goal you would like to achieve, be it a new years resolution, a status in life, a state of mind and personal well being.   Be as specific as possible.

Example: My goal is to be a professional business speaker.  I want to help business people around the world to expand there possibilities.  I want to spark ideas that make people rich, successful, happy, or whole.  As a professional business speaker I would be constantly thinking and observing to find innovations to share with others.  On stage I would be a force of personality and flair (I’m thinking about going with ruby slacks as a visual brand…more on that later.)

2. Where are you now? Leave a space on the page and then describe in relation to your main goal where you are now, be honest and realistic.

Example:  Right now I think a lot and share my thoughts and idea’s in this online forum, but it does not reach the breadth of people I want it to nor fully express my personality and flair.

(P) Our Path

3. How am I going to get there? This is as they say the $64,000 question.  This is also one of the key places people get lost in the process, they take a wrong turn so we need to break it down in to 3 to 5 key sub-goals or focuses.   It may help to think of any major obstacles – then develop strategies to overcome them.  (Leave 3 or 4 lines under each Sub-Goal)

Example:  So 3 things I will need to be a professional speaker are a) something to talk about, b) somewhere to talk, and c) people to listen.  Not so tough.

4.  I believe I can touch the sky…I can succeed! Which is to say, If you think you can…then you can.  Of course the opposite is true.  So for your sub-goals add a little note about how you can achieve this.

Example:
a) something to talk about, – Well I wrote this so I can write a 5 – 10 min on any topic,
b) somewhere to talk, – there are hundreds of clubs/orgs looking for free speakers all the time,
and c) people to listen.  – once they are in the room they don’t have much choice.  “Get the locks!”

(S) Steps to get there.

5. What do I need to do/say/learn/obtain to make this happen? Now you will need to expand your focuses a bit with specific steps you plan to take to reach them, or more information you will need to make them happen.

Example:
a) something to talk about,
Jot down 5 to 10 speech ideas – create outlines for 5 of them – write 2 out completely

b) somewhere to talk,
Make a list of service clubs, Sales organizations, Charity Organizations in the area,
Call them offering a free key note speech – may need a script for this
Host an Ignite event in Ottawa – MC and do 1 or 2 talks

and c) people to listen.  – once they are in the room they don’t have much choice.  “Get the locks!”

6. Date them! You now need to be specific about when the actions will happen.

Example:
a) something to talk about,
Jot down 5 to 10 speech ideas – create outlines for 5 of them – write 2 out completely (May 2010)

b) somewhere to talk,
Make a list of service clubs, Sales organizations, Charity Organizations in the area, (June 2010)
Call them offering a free key note speech – may need a script for this (July 2010)
Host an Ignite event in Ottawa – MC and do 1 or 2 talks (March 2011)

7. Real Accountability…? Like all good plans to backpack Europe, Clean the Kitchen,  Build an Addition, without someone who knows you are planning to, is willing to help you, and cares about your personal growth it is far to easy to “forget about your dreams”.

So you will need to find someone – your spouse, boss, kids, friends, co-workers, coach to tell about your plan, and ask them to help you make it come true, you would do the same for them RIGHT?

Example: I just put this on the Internet (that never goes away), and my face book, and emailed a copy to my wife…it’s gonna happen now!

I hope these 7 steps in 5 min have given you everything you need to get from here (and now) to there (and your dreams.)
